Un nuovo vivaio per Fachjan, top player europeo nelle piante tropicali indoor

Intervista a Keese Janssen, che ci introduce la sua azienda specializzata in piante tropicali da interno e ci informa del positivo 2017: +25% in quantità a fine maggio. La pianta più cara? Un Ficus da 12 mila euro. Fachjan ha acquistato un nuovo vivaio che avvierà la produzione fra pochi mesi.  

janssen, floraviva, flower trialsI Flower Trials, la grande kermesse degli ibridatori di piante in vaso e da aiuola (e non solo) in corso in questi giorni nelle regioni olandesi di Aalsmeer e Westland e in quella tedesca di Rheinland Westfalen, sono stati l’occasione per una visita fuori programma alla sede di Fachjan, azienda olandese leader europea nelle produzioni di piante tropicali e subtropicali da interno (indoor). Qui Floraviva ha incontrato e intervistato il proprietario Keese Janssen, anzi l’ex titolare, visto che ha passato la mano ai suoi figli (anche se, come dice lui, è «contento di continuare a lavorarci»).
Ci può fare una sintetica descrizione della vostra produzione di piante?
«E’ difficile dare una definizione della nostra produzione, perché coltiviamo circa 300 differenti prodotti».
Trecento?
«Sì. Molti prodotti sono per giardini botanici e zoo e per piscine…».
In quale percentuale?
«Circa 2/3 della nostra produzione è destinata alle esportazioni, sull’asta. L’altro terzo è per i progetti».
Ho visto piante molto economiche e piante costosissime: qual è il range dalle più economiche alle più care?
«Non posso fornire un range: abbiamo 600 mila Sansevieria in vasi da 6 cm (queste sono per l’Ikea in Europa) e sono piante molto economiche, ma la nostra pianta più cara al momento vale 12 mila euro».
Che cosa è?
«E’ un Ficus e la prossima settimana lo spediremo per un progetto in Francia».
Le vostre piante sono tutte tropicali?
«Sì, tutte le piante che produciamo sono piante tropicali e sono per interni (indoor). Le uniche altre piante che vendiamo sono pochi olivi e Trachycarpus, ma si tratta di modiche quantità».
E’ vero che siete l’azienda leader in Olanda per le piante tropicali?
«Sì, siamo i primi con questo assortimento di piante. Ce n’è un’altra, ma è più specializzata in vasi».
Quando è iniziata l’attività di Fachjan?
«Ho iniziato con le grandi piante 20 anni fa. Ma le piante in vaso è da 32 anni che le produciamo».
Quali sono le nazioni dove vendete di più?
«Non posso dire in tutto il mondo, perché non possiamo spedire nulla negli Stati Uniti. Ma spediamo tanti prodotti in tutta Europa, spediamo nel Medio Oriente, spediamo in Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan e anche, negli ultimi tempi, in Russia».
Come sta andando il mercato quest’anno? Va bene?
«Abbiamo solo un problema: non abbiamo abbastanza piante da vendere [per soddisfare la domanda dei clienti, ndr]. I primi 3 mesi siamo cresciuti del 40% sull’anno scorso e ad aprile eravamo stabili e l’unica ragione di tale stazionarietà è che avevamo esaurito gli articoli per molte linee di piante».
Così, a confronto dell’anno scorso, può dirci quanto è cresciuta in totale la produzione, in euro o in quantità?
«In quantità ora siamo a +25%, perché non avevamo abbastanza piante disponibili in aprile e maggio».
E questo andamento così positivo del mercato è iniziato l’anno scorso?
«No. Per Fachjan, dopo il 2008, quando la crisi è iniziata in Europa per noi è iniziato il periodo migliore».
Per quale motivo a suo avviso?
«Perché lavoriamo meglio dei nostri concorrenti».
A quanto ammonta il fatturato complessivo della sua azienda?
«Al momento è di circa 12 milioni di euro (2016). Dopo il 2008 siamo cresciuti ogni anno del 20% o più. Nel 2008 avevamo 18 dipendenti, adesso ne abbiamo 60».
Avete nuovi progetti all’orizzonte?
«Alla fine dell’anno scorso abbiamo comprato un nuovo vivaio. Questo vivaio avvierà la produzione fra pochi mesi, così speriamo di poter produrre piante in numero sufficiente per soddisfare i nostri clienti. Ma se cresceremo di un altro 40%, anche queste nuove produzioni saranno vendute tutte».
Dove si trova il nuovo vivaio?
«A quattro chilometri da qua»
E produrrà lo stesso tipo di piante?
«Sì».

A new nursery for Fachjan, top player in Europe in indoor tropical plants

Interview with Keese Janssen, who presents his company, specialized in indoor tropical plants, and inform us about the positive 2017: +25% plants sold in the first five months. The most expensive plant? A Ficus that costs 12.000 euros. Fachjan has bought a new nursery that will start production in a few months.

janssen, flower trials,floravivaFlower Trials 2017, the great event, from 13th to 16th June, in which 59 breeding companies in three regions (Aalsmeer, Westland and Rheinland Westfalen) present their latest innovations and future developments mainly in pot and bedding plants, were the occasion for a visit to the greenhouse complex of Fachjan, top player in Europe in the production of indoor tropical and subtropical plants. Here Floraviva has met and interviewed the owner, Keese Janssen, or rather the previous owner, given that he passed the company's ownership to his two sons (even if, as he says, «he is happy to continue to work»).
Could you give us a short presentation of your production of plants?
«It is hard to give a definition of our production because we grow about 300 different products».
Tre hundreds?
«Yes. A lot of products are for botanical gardens and zoos and for swimming pools…».
Which percentage of this…
«About 2/3 of our production goes to exports, on the auction. And 1/3 is for projects».
I have seen very cheap and very expensive plants: what is the range from the cheapest to the most expensive?
«I can’t give you the range, because we have 600.000 Sansevieria in 6 cm pots (this is for Ikea in Europe) and these plants are very cheap. Our most expensive plant at the moment is 12 thousands euro».
What is this?
«It’s a Ficus and the next week we will ship it to a project in France».
Are your plants all tropical plants?
«Yes, all the plants we produce are tropical plants and they are for indoor. The only other plants that we sell sometime are a few olive trees and a few Trachycarpus, but it’s only a few».
Are you the leader company for tropical plants in Holland?
«Yes, we are the biggest one with this assortment of plants. There is still one, but it’s more specialised in pots».
When you started this business?
«I started 20 years ago with the big plants. But the pot plants are we doing now for 32 years».
Which are the countries where you sell more?
«I cannot say all around the world, because we can’t ship anything to the United States. But we ship a lot to all of Europe, we ship to the Middle East, we ship to Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan and also the last few times to Russia».
How is the market this year? Is it ok?
«We have only one problem: we have not enough plants to sell. The first 3 months we grew 40% and in April we were stable and the only reason why we were stable in April was that we were sold out for a lot of plants».
So, compared to last year, how much more production, either in euro or in quantity?
«In quantity now is +25%, because there were not enough plants available in April and May».
And this so positive trend is started last year?
«No. For Fachjan, after 2008, when the crisis started in Europe for us began the best times».
What is the reason of these results on your opinion?
«We do better than our competitors».
What is the total turnover of the company?
«At the moment is about 12 million euros (2016). After 2008 we grew each year 20% or more. In 2008 we had 18 workers, now we have 60 wokers».
Have you new plans for the future?
«At the end of last year we bought another nursery for production. This nursery will be in a few months in production so we hope that we will have done enough plants to keep our customers satisfied. But if we will grow another 40%, the production will be again sold out».
Where is the new nursery?
«Four kilometers from here»
And will it produce the same plants?
«Yes».
