Arte Verde: Mothership

Arte Verde: Mothership and the floating forest

Everything starts when  Jeroen Everaert menager of the cultural production center Mothership remains fascinated by the questions created in himself by the work of  Jorge Bakker, colombina artist but in effect by dutch adoption: ““In Search of Habitats”,  an aquarium containing scale trees hanged up on the water through floats. What kind of relation we have with the surrounding nature? What kind of place we want to give it in the next future? From this point, in addition to  Jeroen and Mothershipare ivolved also  Anne van der Zwaag, historical and and cultural menager, and the dutch desiner  Jurgen Bey with the aim to take into the urban reality the idea of Bakker's art work. In this way is borned “Bobbing Forest”, the first floating forest in the world, realized in the harbour basin of Rijnhaven in Rotterdam. Twenty trees are anchored to the bottom and the twenty-first is on the quay so that inhabitant and tourists can observe it very close to understand the importance of green areas in the urban tissu. The art work is become message and real challagne: for its realization  Mothership has instead involved students from the Faculty of Applied Sciences of the University of  Van Hall Larenstein, some civil engineers aspring from the Delft University of Technology, the Rijkswaterstaat, Agency of the Ministry of Infrastructure and the Environment, and  Bomendepot, a structure of the Municipality that deals with the “tree storage”. Big researches and studies have been necessary to find a plant aible to resist to wind and survive in the salty waters of the harbour, The Dutch Elm, or to change the buoys so that they could not tip over. Almost all the materials used for the realiuzation of the “Bobbing Forest” are recycled in support of the idea of sustainability taht the forest wnat to communicate to Rotterdam citizen and not only. From Rotterdam art and innovation throw their message for a green future, who will answer?
